How to Cope with Pet Loss: Tom’s Story and a Reminder of Love

This Week’s Cat-alog Blog: Saying Goodbye to Tom

Some stories stay with you.

Tom’s is one of them.

For 11 years, he was more than just a cat. He was a constant presence. The kind of companion who weaves himself into the fabric of your everyday life without ever asking for much.

When his family noticed a wound above his eye that wouldn’t heal, they assumed it was from a scuffle — one of those things that happen when you’ve been roaming the neighborhood for over a decade. But the truth turned out to be far more difficult. It was cancer.

They did everything they could.

Kirsten stepped in to help with the treatments. Dr. García gave him care. His family stayed by his side, choosing comfort and compassion above all else.

Last night, Tom passed away.

It’s hard to describe what it feels like to lose a pet — not just because it hurts, but because it’s the kind of grief that sits in quiet places. These animals become part of our rituals. They greet us at the door. They know our moods. They fill the space without needing to say anything at all.

When they're gone, the absence is loud.

If you’ve ever loved and lost an animal, you understand. And if you’re going through it now, here are a few gentle reminders:

  • Grief is not linear. Let it come in waves.

  • Talk about them. Say their name. Laugh about the weird stuff they used to do.

  • Create a small space for remembrance — a framed photo, a favorite toy, a plant in their honor.

  • Stay connected. Talk to people who understand.

Kirsten continues to help cats like Tom get a fighting chance — to live longer, better lives. Not every story has a happy ending, but every animal deserves to be seen, helped, and loved.

If you want to support this work, there are a few simple ways to do it.

Donate. Adopt. Shop.

Every contribution helps us show up for the next Tom — and the people who love them.

Thank you for being part of the journey.
