The Los Naranjos Rescue | Kirsten Cares For Cats

The Los Naranjos Rescue

Some stories are harder to tell. This one starts in Los Naranjos, where an older woman had been keeping several cats and kittens in terrible conditions. She refused help, claiming she did not want the cats, yet she would not let anyone take them. The kittens were starving. The neighbors knew, and for years, no one could make her stop.

One of the kittens in this neglect case.

When Kirsten heard what was happening, she could not ignore it. She began pushing every door she could find, demanding action from the authorities, the Justice of the Peace, anyone who would listen. Each visit brought another excuse. They told her not to upset the woman. They told her to wait. But waiting meant more kittens would die.

Days passed with no response. Kirsten went back again and again. The situation grew worse. Reports came in that people were running over the street cats instead of stopping. One was even found decapitated. It was a nightmare that no one wanted to claim responsibility for.

Finally, after relentless effort, Kirsten managed to get the attention of the right people. Six cats from the property were sterilized, including the momma cat of the two surviving black kittens. The others were taken for checkups. The kittens were anemic, covered in fleas, and one did not make it. The remaining two were placed with kind foster parents, Jeff and Nancy, who cared for them through the night on a soft blanket and heating pad.

The clinic is handling all the sterilizations, vaccines and more.

It is not the happy ending anyone wishes for, but it is progress. It is a small piece of mercy carved out of neglect and indifference. Kirsten is now working with the neighbors to keep the area safe, make sure the woman does not take in more cats, and continue sterilizations in the community.

This is what compassion looks like when it is stubborn. It is not pretty. It is not easy. It is people like Kirsten showing up again and again because no one else will.
